01 · Who are we?

A different approach to solar.

Technical Site Services was created after Paul, our Technical Director, spent over a decade working inside the PV and battery installation industry. Having seen solar mis-sold and customers misled, he took a different approach: what works best for you, the end user - not what works best for the profit margin. Together we can make the change from fossil fuels to renewables, the right way.

Tailormade solutions that work for your benefit and the planet. Whether you want a small shed PV system, an adjustable ground mount or a 10 MW installation - we're here to help you get the right system for the right price.

“I spent a decade watching solar get mis-sold. Technical Site Services exists so the engineering comes first - we'll tell you when it's the wrong fit, and we'll show our working when it's the right one.”

Pick your roof. We'll size the array.

Choose the shape closest to your roof, set the orientation, and click on the faces of the building you'd put panels on. Optional postcode pulls live UK grid intensity for an honest CO₂ figure. It's a sketch, not a quote — we still come and survey before we commit.

Numbers first. Sales pitch never.

Two quick tools: how much could solar save you, and how big a system do you actually need? South East England rates and SEG export tariffs baked in. Real prices come after the survey.

Every panel pulls a tonne off the grid.

The maths is unsexy and easy to verify. Annual generation × the carbon intensity of the grid you're displacing = real CO₂ savings. We use the live carbonintensity.org.uk figure, not a flattering number from a marketing deck.

What clients say when we're not in the room.

No filtering, no five-star carousel of strangers. A recent job, in their own words.

Paul and his team did a wonderful job on our two solar packages from start to finish. Support through designing the right package including system design and choice. During installation the team were professional and efficient. Highly recommended.

09 · Common questions

Questions we're always asked.

The same eight or nine questions come up on every survey. Here's the straight answer to each, with the working shown.

How much does a typical domestic PV system cost?
We can't give a meaningful number without seeing the roof. Pricing depends on system size, mount type (in-roof, on-roof or ground-mount), scaffold complexity, DNO requirements, and whether you're adding battery storage. Typical 4 kWp domestic installs across the South East currently sit between £6,500 and £10,000 fitted. Commercial work is quoted per project. You'll get a fixed-price quote after the survey, with the working shown.
Do I need planning permission for solar panels?
For most domestic installs, no - permitted development covers panels mounted on the slope of the roof, within set protrusion and area limits. Listed buildings, conservation areas, and most flat-roof or ground-mount installs are the exceptions. We handle Listed Building Consent applications where needed and have taken several Grade II listed installs through LBC first-try.
What is the G99 process and when do I need it?
G99 is the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) approval process for new generation connecting to the grid. Anything over 3.68 kW per phase requires G99 approval before commissioning. We handle the DNO application, supply the technical schedules, and time the install around the DNO's response window (typically 4-6 weeks). Where the DNO requires export limitation, we configure G100-compliant inverter limits at commissioning.
How is battery storage sized?
Smaller than most installers will quote. The right battery is the smallest one that covers your typical evening consumption while leaving capacity for one cloudy day. Oversized batteries don't pay back. We work it out from your half-hourly import data (or estimate from your annual usage if you don't have a smart meter yet) and quote against actual usage, not a sales target.
How long do solar panels last?
Quality monocrystalline panels are warrantied for 25 years to retain at least 80-85% of their rated output. Inverters typically need replacing once in that window (10-15 year service life). Mounting hardware and cabling outlast both. We use Tier 1 manufacturers across panels, inverters and batteries.
Is solar still worth it now the Feed-in Tariff has ended?
Yes, by a clearer margin than under the FiT. The economics now rest on self-consumption plus the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), and grid electricity prices have risen far faster than panel costs have fallen. Typical UK payback in 2026 sits at 7-11 years depending on usage pattern. We work the numbers honestly on the survey - including the cases where it's not worth doing.
Do you install solar on listed buildings?
Yes, with the right approach: slate-tone or all-black panels, sympathetic mounting (often in-roof rather than on-roof), and a planning visual the conservation officer can actually evaluate. Several first-try LBC approvals on Grade II listed properties to date.
How long does a solar installation take on site?
A standard domestic PV install is 2-3 days on site: scaffold up day one, panels and DC side day two, inverter, AC connection and commissioning day three. Battery storage adds half a day. Commercial roof-mount and ground-mount jobs are quoted per project. The DNO/G99 approval window is the longest unknown, typically 4-6 weeks ahead of install.
